In 2013 David Garcia, PT, CKTI and Jayson Goo, ATC, CKTI had the opportunity to team teach a specialized class for the US Navy’s Sea, Air, and Land warfare (S.E.A.L.S.) Physical Therapist and Trainers. David and Jayson realized the combination of two seasoned instructors provided the students an enhanced Kinesio Taping® Method, and it expedited the seminar participants' learning and experience. The decision form a partnership to team teach Kinesio Taping® Method classes together and Pacific Rim Seminars was born in 2013. Both David and Jayson still teach classes as individual instructors but work together when time and schedules permit.
WHAT IS KINESIO TAPING?
The Kinesio Taping Method® invented and developed by Dr. Kenzo Kase in 1973. It is a treatment that is felt to prolong the effects of physiologic work done. After many unsuccessful attempts to use adhesive tapes that were commercially available, Dr. Kase developed Kinesio Tex Tape. The Kinesio Taping Method® is believed to cause physiological effects on several body systems. The systems affected by the body are thought to include the circulatory/lymphatic, neural, muscular, and fascial systems, as well as the joints. The Kinesio Taping Method® is currently being used by therapists to affect muscle tone, move lymphatic fluids, correct movement patterns, and improve posture. The Kinesio Taping Method® is a unique method of applying Kinesio Tex Tape in a specific manner to create change in the aforementioned systems. Benefits of using the tape are that it is more economical over time than other modalities, it is easy to learn and apply, there are less types of tape, and it may be used over a longer period of time.
The Kinesio Taping Method® differs from athletic strapping tape and other taping methods, full pain free ranges of motion and muscle movement are allowed. The Kinesio Taping Method has been developed specifically to be used in conjunction with Kinesio Tape. The Kinesio Taping Association certifies practitioners of the Kinesio Taping Method.
WHO IS USING KINESIO TAPE?
Physical therapists, occupational therapists, certified athletic trainers, chiropractors, physicians, manual therapists, nurses, and physiotherapists around the world are using Kinesio Tape for many dysfunctions on a wide spectrum from temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder to turf toe. Today, though Kinesio Tex Tape is used primarily by non-athletic populations, it is also used by high profile athletes.
With an ever growing foundation of health professionals desiring and willing to become certified in the Kinesio Taping® Method, the Kinesio Taping Association International (KTAI) has designed a certification process that will allow dedicated practitioners to earn their designation as a Certified Kinesio Taping Practitioner (CKTP®):
